| Rainy Season Starts in Pavones |
The forecast calls for sunny mornings and late afternoon Chubascos, with possible aguaceros, according to a forecast from Costa Rica's meteorological institute. A chubasco is a fast downpour that starts and ends suddenly in a localized area. An aguacero is a more sustained, heavier rain.

The start of rainy season is usually a welcome relief, and rains from April to August are usually limited to the late afternoons -- when everyone is surfed-out or taking a pre-supper siesta. Just don't leave the laundry out on the line.

Pavones has many micro-climates:
There are many times that we stand on the beach at the point (Rio Claro de Pavones) and watch the rains fall across the gulf onto Matapalo, which gets significantly more rain than Pavones.
Meanwhile, at the north end of our hamlet, Cuervito, Pilon and Cocal tend to get less rain than Rio Claro, while the areas to the south -- Punta Banco -- are wetter.
The central pacific and central valley has until the end of April before their rainy season begins.
The meteorological institute expects that 2011 will be "a wet year, above the normal (historical) averages, but not as wet as last year."
The Costa Rican meteorological institute cited the Central Valley as an example. There, normal annual precipitation is 2,000 mm. This year, the valley could receive 2,600 millimeters (2,600 liters per square meter).
The meteorologist said Costa Rica will remain under the influence of La Niña phenomenon and expected the occurrence of eight major storms, three of them becoming hurricanes. Hurricanes hit the eastern, Caribbean areas of Costa Rica; Pavones does not get "hit" with hurricanes, but we do get the rain that makes it over the high mountains of the continental divide.
Today we added a weather report onto the right side of this page. Let us know what you think. Thanks for reading us!
The meteorlogical institute says that rainy season starts next week for Pavones, Costa Rica and the rest of the southern zone, including Zancudo, Punta Banco, Pilon, Cuervito and Matapalo -- thanks to the effects of this year's La Nina weather pattern.
