Felix was an outgoing and generous person. He shared his money with people in need. Felix's death is tragic, sad and violent. However Felix was not a welcome addition to the community of Pavones.
Felix was a known cocaine dealer. His days were spent around the Cantina, drinking beer and trying to find customers. People were attracted to Felix because he was clean cut, generous, and outgoing. Felix may have left Panama to avoid problems there, but it is possible these problems from Panama caught up with him here in Costa Rica.
Felix had no family here to press the OIJ to perform a thorough investigation. (He is from Puerto Armuelles, Panama, his nickname was "Pana." His family thought he was in Pavones doing honest work as a laborer.) Perhaps because they are in Panama, and perhaps because the logistics are difficult, they have not filed a denuncia (police report) in Costa Rica. Additionally, Costa Rican families often hire criminal lawyers to do what the OIJ is understaffed and underfunded to do: carry out a full investigation. This only adds to the tragedy, because there are few forces to bring the guilty party to justice.
For his family, Felix's friends and members of the community, this has been a traumatizing experience. We extend our condolences to Felix's family, and the prayers of many people are with them during this very difficult time.
If you have memories of Felix that you'd like to share here, please add your comments.

We were horrified to learn of Felix's death. While we were in Pavones he was a good friend to us and we loved him a lot. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends. Everyone must be very shocked. Our love to all. Anna & Hide
ReplyDeleteI do not know who he was, but one less drug dealer in Pavones sounds like a good thing to me.
ReplyDeleteI knew Felix and I don't understand the "good friend" comments. He preyed upon the community, he was a drug dealer, he was sleazy and he was no gentlemen to the girls in town. Obviously he should have left long ago.
ReplyDeleteA tragic loss the the community. Having gotten into trouble with some not so honorable drug dealers in Panama he comes here to straighten out his life by dealing drugs in our community. He was a role model to the kids in town. Why go to school or work for a living when you could hang out at the cantina, drink beer and sell drugs to the stupid gringos. While he was being "a good friend to us" his proteges at the cantina would be breaking into his "good friends" cabinas and stealing what they could.
ReplyDeleteThere is a vacancy here now for a drug dealer. With any luck Felix's friends from Panama will fill that opening.
Whatever Felix's faults, nobody deserves to die like that.
ReplyDeleteIll Advised coverage........ A misguided attempt at legitamising an absolute criminal. I´m appalled such credence was given him. He caused nothing but harm to the community.
ReplyDeleteNOT A WORD SHOULD HAVE BEEN WRITTEN ! A dark cloud has been lifted from our midst. Our children have been spared of one more despicable low life, that regularly frequented ¨The Cantina¨.
SHOCKED INDEED !!! Shocked that he is worthy of even being acknowledged.¨ In order to value another life, one must value life¨
The departed, did nothing but diminish life, for profit. Causing a human toll, that all who lives in this community have had to bear.
Dear Blog Author...... either it takes you an inordinate amount of time to process comments....... OR, you are exercising YOUR OWN BRAND OF CENSORSHIP under the heading ¨Comment Moderation¨. In essence any comment that suggests, THE BLOG AUTHOR, MAY HAVE made a flagrant error IN JUDGMENT,appears NOT to get published ! IS THAT HOW IT WORKS ?
ReplyDeleteJust admit that the Felix story,or BLOG, if you will, was a huge mistake on your part. Your credibility, indeed integrity is in serious question.SHAME ON YOU, a totally irresponsible, ill thought out blog authoring, that deserves to be slammed for what it is. TRASH!! At this point, ITS GOODBYE To¨Good Morning Pavones¨.
¨Pura Basura¨
It would appear,¨GOOD MORNING PAVONES ¨ i.e. the Blog Author is blatantly employing censorship !!
ReplyDeleteIf you don´t like the comments, THEN DON´T author such stupid articles that attract justified criticism of your inept editorial judgment. I´m appalled at the article. You should deservedly take it on the chin. You owe the law abiding community of Pavones a written apology, or at least a retraction !

ReplyDeleteI am somewhat new in town but I have managed to spend a total of about a year in Pavones over the past three years.I know very little spanish and getting to know people is very hard when you cant talk to them . One day ,I figured I would go hang out at the cantina with a frisbee. Felix was a total stranger but he jumped up and offered to throw it with me. He offered me a beer and seemed to sense that I was trying to make friends and went out of his way to make me feel welcome. I heard he was a coke dealer and I let him know how I felt about coke....that its a selfish drug for selfish people and that it seems to leave a trail of destruction and leads to nothing good....even the come down off of it is tough and thats how I felt about it,but drugs had nothing to do with our relationship and we were always friendly to each other.Felix was there because there exists a need for him to be there. If not Felix it will be someone else.I saw him often hanging out waiting for customers. I have heard some stories about his generosity ,but dont know if they are true. All I can attest to is that he was decent and always very nice ,and generous to me and did not try to sell me a damn thing nor did he ever ask me for anything. I dont do coke ,but the next time I go to Pavones I will miss Felix and his genuine smile.Thank You for saying some nice things about Felix.I second the emotion. William ....tarzappa.com
ReplyDeleteOne should never speak ill of the dead............ However, one should never expound upon the values and virtues of another man, when so much is unknown, or of what dwells in the dark places, of another mans mind.
ReplyDeleteIf anonymous is refering to my post, I would say that I expounded on nothing,I simply stated my experience....and oh yeah! I almost forgot....my little dog Weedles liked Felix too ,and believe me Weedles does not base his opinion on hear say and he uses a lot of discernment.William.....tarzappa.com
ReplyDelete¨ The Devil wears many disguises ¨
ReplyDeleteFact - not hear say - or opinion.
One night at the cantina, the same friendly affable guy, walked up and without provocation, smashed a defenseless tourist, in the face, with a heavy stick. The victim, was brutally assaulted and required immediate medical treatment. Multiple stitches were required to close a gaping face wound. Scarred for life, the victim and two friends left Pavones early the next day to return home for Europe.
The police questioned and warned the deceased, to be on good behavior. No charges were brought.
The victim, obviously, was neither a buyer or a frisbee player.......and paid dearly for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Dear Blog Author,site administrator,
ReplyDeleteDO US ALL A FAVOR !
It´s time for you to simply delete the Felix story and bury the entire blog along with it.
Let it rest in peace with the deceased.

ReplyDelete"Felix was there because there because there exists a need for him to be there"
ReplyDeleteThat remark is fatuous.
I guess if he was not there selling ,they would'nt have been there buying....or is it that there were plenty of buyers so he was there selling....which is the way I see it....believe me coke will not disappear with his death.....neccessity IS the mother of invention. What is so fatous about stating the obvious? And anonymous ....I am not defending Felix,as I said ,I dont speak Spanish so I was unable to get to know him.Once again I am only stating my experience. My brother ,and two of my best friends were murdered, one of them just this past July.I have also lost many friends to drugs so I tend to take life seriously. If I dismissed a person because of there abhorrent behavior there would be few people left in my life.As I said ,I told him what I thought about coke, and he asked me to give him a job so he could get out of it.(I did not take him seriously, but he was)There may well be more to the face smashing story...if it was in him to do that to somebody else ,then he probably didnt freak out to much when it was done to him.He reaped what he had sown. Remember the trick is to be aware but to always see someone in the most positive light possible.Yes,this can put you in a position to be taken advantage of...but when you are in the love vibration(((patience, understanding ,forgiveness, compassion, etc.)you dont worry about it and leave the crap to God.WE ALL KNOW THAT GOD IS LOVE.How long do you damn a soul until it can be free again. The damned soul needs your love even more.Start by seeing what was good about him .God took care of the rest.Ive always hated good and bad polarity crap cause its not black and white its gray.I dont like lynch mobs either or people that say "it served him right" William....tarzappa.com
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a lot of buttons pushed here: blogging & reporting, drugs & drug dealing, general judgements & personal experience, tolerance & resistance of opinion.
ReplyDeleteHang in there, blogger!
Communities and families hold a lot of dichotomies, and Pavones is no exception.

ReplyDeleteDear El Maestro,
ReplyDeleteThe veracity, indeed validity, of one of your correspondents, speaks for itself. Of discerning dogs and friendly, deceased drug dealing, frisbee throwers.
I accept the tone of my previous contributed comment, was strong and personal and probably rejected, for that reason. But you allow such absurd ramblings, without direct rebuttal.
Yet again, you clearly demonstrated ,a serious breach in editorial balance. I wont even revisit the integrity issue, of the story being published at all.
However, it is interesting to note, if not curious, that you saw fit to move the story, to the bottom of Octobers feature list. Please...... El Maestro, keep going and delete the whole story, completely off the page. Then at least finally, you would of done something editorially constructive. Besides piss off, a lot of us, that love and call Pavones our home. For sure, you would not hear from me again. The story you published demands constant challenge and I have taken up the mantle, in the interest of real perspective and more importantly, what is right!
Long time ,full time resident.
Please can we be spared from fatuous rambling, ego driven and religious nonsense.
