10 Questions for a New Mother in Pavones

A frequent question from visitors is "what is it like to raise children in Pavones?" Janna Farmer's son, Taj S. Cameron Rios Farmer, was born April 5th, 2008. As the child of an American citizen, being born in Costa Rica gives Taj dual citizenship in the US and Costa Rica. Good Morning Pavones spoke to Janna:

How was your birth experience?

Wonderful. Taj was born at the Clinica Biblica hospital in San Jose. The staff was attentive and respectful, the care was complete and the price was very fair. I truly feel that I would not have found better care in the states.

What's the best thing about raising Taj in Pavones?

The ocean and the people. Taj adores swimming in the ocean and crawling in the sand. Our neighbors in Pavones are very open and friendly, and everyone says hello to him. I also like that the community is so diverse.

How is raising a baby here different than in the states?

People here are more friendly and accommodating about babies than in the states, and childcare here is more affordable. I could never find this quality of childcare in the states for a reasonable price.

What do you miss most from the states?

I miss my family and childhood friends.

What are your options for Taj's schooling?

Taj can go to the public school or the new charter school Camino Claro. Many kids go to both, an option I like because he'll have a variety of experiences.

What advantages do you think Taj will have?

Children here have a lot of self confidence, they play a lot outdoors, and their social skills are really good because they are immersed in human interaction. Plus, he'll learn about many different cultures, speak at least two languages and be well traveled – and travel well.

What's been the nicest surprise?

Taj goes to bed early at night, and when the birds and monkeys wake up at 4 a.m., and so does Taj, he loves to listen to their morning calls, and he calls back to the animals.

What's been the worst surprise?

Taj was stung by a scorpion, obviously it hurt him, but benadryl helped and the next morning he was fine. I was more scared than he was. I feel very safe living here. A vehicle, a phone and good friends help a lot.

Is Taj surfing yet?

Taj is a water baby, he actually squeals with joy when his toes hit the water. His dad (Harley Rios) has gotten him on a surf board, on dry land, just to get him ready for Kiddie Corner (a small surf break in town).
